Building Better Opportunities

Our evaluation of the Routes project

Routes is a Building Better Opportunities project funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and European Social Fund). Led by Community Works in Brighton, Routes is one of a number of initiatives across England and offers free one-to-one personalised support to help people into employment. The project supports people who are furthest from the workplace – those who are long terms unemployed, economically inactive and experiencing multiple barriers to gaining employment.

We have worked closely with the partnership to manage and deliver ROUTES TO SUCCESS an evaluation of Phase 1 of  Routes (2016 to 2019). This included 30 in-depth interviews with clients, outlined in the report, that show the breadth of support provided for clients.

Phase 1 has helped 171 people on their journey into employment by providing intensive work placements, local learning opportunities, employability information and advice as well as practical help such as covering the costs of childcare and travel to work.

“The help, support, kindness and knowing someone out there was on your side made a real difference.”

“I wouldn’t have had the confidence to go anywhere if I hadn’t come here first.”

“A full-time job, I couldn’t be happier.”

In Phase 1:

  • 4 new models of support were developed.
  • Targets were met or exceeded during the project timescales.
  • Hidden successes have been identified as many participants have found employment or started volunteering since leaving the project.
  • it has provided an example of good practice in management and delivery.

Congratulations to the Routes project partners who have secured a second round of funding to continue with Phase 2 of Routes from March 2019 to 2021. The Routes to Success flyer has information about the next phase and and contact details for the partners and their new Routes website has now been launched.
