Maureen Haywood –

Maureen shares responsibility for our company’s strategic direction in addition to using her expertise to create user friendly web and paper materials, develop e-learning resources and undertake research for our clients. As well as having 20 years experience as a College and University Lecturer, she has specialised in  supporting adults in their work, career and education decisions.

Maureen gained her skills in designing and developing websites and e-learning materials whilst working for The Open University. She has also worked for the University of Brighton, where she used her considerable skills to initiate, develop and direct the national award-winning  Learning Opportunities service that operated in the South East between 2007 and 2015. Maureen now works from Dorset.

Debra Vice-Holt –

Debra has extensive knowledge of the education sector and a long held interest in widening participation, working with both young and mature learners. She was previously Director of Aimhigher Sussex and was module leader of the Community Participation module at the University of Brighton. Alongside her interest in education she is a keen advocate of business. She is a member of the Entrepreneurial Advisors Steering Group for the Coast to Capital Local Economic Partnership representing both education and small businesses. Debra works across the region as Vice Chair of the Gatwick Diamond Business Association.

Debra has  experience in management, both in the public and private sector, and holds both the Foundation and Practitioner Project Management qualification in PRINCE2. As well as being a qualified coach, she has a strong track record of training and is both an engaging and persuasive presenter. Debra was a semi finalist in the Business Women Excellent Awards in Education and previously was Chair of the Brighton Women’s Centre.  She is based in Brighton, Sussex.

Chris Baker –

Chris has over 30 years experience in higher education. During this time he has specialised in setting up and launching new ventures. A trained policy analyst he has experience of teaching and curriculum development in higher and adult education. He also has a track record of doing applied research and consultancy in both the public and private sectors.

Chris has an in depth knowledge of e and blended learning having worked at The Open University for twenty years, latterly as the Director of Widening Participation. He is committed to turning the rhetoric surrounding lifelong learning into a reality.

Since then he has worked at the University of Brighton where he was involved in developing ways to enable a deeper engagement with external communities be they local, national or international.  Chris is based in Brighton, Sussex.


James Ransom

James has worked in research and policy at both national and international level, with a particular focus on higher education.  He works for Universities UK as a Policy Researcher, having previously worked for UNESCO in Vietnam and for the Association of Commonwealth Universities.  He has conducted evaluation work on the DFID-funded Commonwealth Scholarship Programme, looking at indicators of student success in distance learning.  He has a BA in History from University College London and a MSc in International Development from Lund University, Sweden.  He has been involved with the City Growth Commission work on graduate retention and universities in metro areas, the Government Office for Science foresight project on the future of cities, and various government consultations and inquiries.

Lynne Varney

Lynne is a qualified adviser with over 20 years experience in the Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) sector as a Careers Adviser, Trainer, Assessor, Coach and Mentor. She has worked in a variety of education, community and employer settings.  Lynne’s impressive qualifications are too numerous to list but they include a Postgraduate Certificate in Vocational Guidance as well as a Diploma in Coaching and Certificates in Managing Lifelong Learning and Psychometric Assessment. Lynne’s insightful assessment of needs ensures that she can effectively motivate both individuals and teams.

Miranda Glavin

Miranda is a professional careers consultant, trainer and writer. She uses expertise gained from ten years of experience in education and commercial fields to design and deliver effective CEIAG and training training programmes. Her clients range from individual education providers to multinational corporations. She is also a director of Elev8careers, a social enterprise she founded to pioneer new ways of supporting people in their career development.

We work across all industries and have expertise working with start ups and established businesses, operating as social enterprises, charities, public and private sector organisations.

Fresh Ambition currently provide volunteer mentoring for the government’s New Enterprise Allowance scheme and deliver Enterprise and Entrepreneurship training on behalf of the University of Brighton.
